About the Salt Lake Film Society

Our Mission Statement

The Salt Lake Film Society is the premiere film establishment of our community. We promote diversity of film exhibition and creation. We educate, advocate, and inform about and through cinema. We foster film talent and cultivate film appreciation and participation. Our programs and venues ensure that the potent ideas and voices of film are accessible to our community.

Preservation & Restoration of Local Cinematic Landmarks
The Salt Lake Film Society (SLFS) operates and mainains the Historic Tower Theater and the Broadway Centre Cinemas, both of which are local cinematic landmarks. SLFS has upgraded projection and sound technologies for better film presentation, and patrons of the Tower Theatre can now enjoy cool and comfortable summer screenings thanks to a major air-conditioning upgrade in mid-2005.

Programming Past and Present
The SLFS has been dedicated to artistic, American-independent and foreign language cinema since its inception. SLFS provides the best of cinema's past and present, presenting first-run screenings of the newest documentary and narrative films -- local to global. Many of these films (including much small, lesser-known cinema) would be unavailable to our community if not presented by the SLFS. SLFS selects films that are meaningful, artistic, creative, thought-provoking and fun. We have screened films from established directors and promising talents alike, and showcased cinematic movements such as the Dogme '95 school. In addition, The SLFS is proud to be an official venue of the Sundance Film Festival. Also, SLFS maintains a growing yet carefully cultivated video library at the Tower Theatre, to make quality cinema available for home-viewing.

Other Programs and Events
Our Artists in Film program has brought 9 independent film directors, actors, and writers (Trent Harris, John Pierson, Mike Shiley, etc.) to our community to discuss their projects and techniques. SLFS chooses not the flashy celebrities with attention-getting careers, but attempts to present the rare breed of independent filmmakers who push the boundaries of cinema to improve their communities through film-vision. We develop and present programs for and with our community, including our Utah Screenwriters Project, designed to build and enrich a strong network of film writers within our local community, and our Big Pictures Little People program to provide quality film to community youth. Also, look for our annual "Overlooked Films of the Year" series following the Sundance Film Festival. SLFS is proud to partner with various film and community organizations for programs and discussion panels; among others, SpyHop Productions, The Global Film Initiative, International Rescue Committee, and Utah Health and Human Rights Project.
